Browser Slow, Crashing or Redirecting? Safe First Checks

Troubleshoot a slow or unreliable browser without immediately deleting profiles, saved sessions or business settings.

    Check what is actually affected

If one website fails in every browser, its service or your connection may be involved. If many websites fail only in one profile, look at that browser’s settings. Record the exact error; “not secure” and “no internet” mean different things. Do not ignore certificate warnings to get past an unfamiliar page.

    Try small, reversible checks

    1. Save work, close unnecessary tabs and restart the browser.
    2. Check for an update through its built-in About or Help screen.
    3. Test with extensions temporarily disabled, keeping a note of what you changed.
    4. Compare the same page in a private window without entering sensitive details on a suspicious site.

If a private window works, extensions or stored site data may be involved. Clear data for the affected site only when appropriate, and expect to sign in again. A full-browser reset can change settings you rely on; read the vendor’s explanation first.

    Pop-ups and unwanted redirects

Check notification permissions for unfamiliar websites and review extensions you do not recognise. Browser notification spam is not the same as a confirmed device infection. Do not install a cleaner or call a number offered by the pop-up. If you gave someone remote access or entered account credentials, investigate that separately.

    Before deleting a profile

Confirm where bookmarks, saved logins and work-specific settings are stored and whether they are backed up or synchronised. An employer may manage the browser. Ask before changing policies, proxy settings or security software.

Remote support can help investigate these differences and decide on a proportionate fix. In your enquiry, include the browser, error message and whether another browser works, without sending screenshots that reveal private tabs or account details.
