Mac Running Slowly or Showing Errors? Start Here
Practical first checks for Mac software issues, with clear boundaries for hardware faults, login problems and remote assistance.

A slow Mac is not always a broken Mac
Use Activity Monitor to see which applications are busy and check available storage. On current macOS versions, review System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions for optional items you recognise. Do not remove security, backup or employer-managed tools without understanding their role.
If the slowdown happens only online, compare a local document with a website. If it affects one application, check that application’s requirements and recent changes. This helps avoid treating a network problem as a hardware problem.
Back up before a major change
Check that an appropriate backup exists before a large update, reinstall or storage cleanup. Do not delete unfamiliar Library folders because a search result says they are “cache”. Some applications store important local data outside Documents, and cloud sync is not a complete recovery plan.
Login and startup problems are different
A forgotten Mac login password needs Apple’s supported recovery options for the legitimate owner. A work-managed Mac may need the organisation’s administrator. A normal screen-sharing session usually cannot start if you cannot sign in. Describe the screen from another device before purchasing remote support.
Physical damage, a swollen battery, unusual heat, liquid exposure or a device that will not power on needs appropriate hands-on assessment. Stop using an unsafe device rather than trying repeated software fixes.
Prepare a useful support enquiry
Include the Mac model or approximate age, macOS version if available, which app fails and the exact message. Explain what you already tried and whether a backup exists. We can investigate suitable software and configuration issues remotely, but we cannot replace parts, bypass encryption or guarantee recovery of missing data.
