Windows Updates: Safe Checks Before You Restart
Prepare for Windows updates, understand Windows 10 support changes and avoid destructive fixes when an update fails.

Check which Windows version you have
Open Settings > System > About and note the edition and version. Standard Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Some devices have separately enrolled or organisation-managed extended support; eligibility and coverage vary. Check Microsoft’s current guidance before deciding to keep a Windows 10 device in business use.
Prepare before an update
- Confirm important files are backed up and that you know how to access the backup.
- Make sure a laptop has reliable power and sufficient storage.
- Know where your BitLocker recovery information is held, without posting it publicly.
- Arrange a time when a restart will not interrupt invoices, meetings or other critical work.
A backup and an update address different risks. Installing updates does not replace a recovery plan, and a full backup does not make unsupported software secure.
Use the built-in update process
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and review the offered updates. Read any messages about a required restart. Do not interrupt a working installation merely because it takes longer than expected. Use Microsoft or the device manufacturer for update advice rather than unofficial “fix all” downloads.
If an update fails
Record the error code, the update name and how far it gets. Check whether the computer starts normally and whether an update is already waiting for a restart. Avoid editing the registry, deleting system folders or resetting Windows as your first response. Those actions can introduce a second problem or put data at risk.
A support enquiry is more useful with the Windows version and exact failure than a photo containing personal information. Remote investigation may help when Windows still runs and can connect. A recovery loop or inaccessible encrypted drive may require guided recovery or hands-on assistance instead.
