Computer Running Slow? Safe Checks for Windows and Mac

Find out why your PC or Mac is slow, which software checks to try first, and when a hardware problem needs a different kind of help.

    1. Separate a slow computer from slow internet

Open a local document and then a familiar website. If documents open normally but websites lag, investigate the network or browser first. If one application alone freezes, record its name, version and any error. A new laptop can still feel slow when a connection or particular app is the bottleneck.

    2. Check Windows without buying a cleaner

    1. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and inspect CPU, memory and disk use while the delay is happening.
    2. Review Startup apps. Disable only optional apps you recognise; leave security and business management tools alone.
    3. Open Settings > System > Storage. Review temporary files carefully before removing anything, especially Downloads.
    4. Check Windows Update and restart when convenient. Use the device maker’s own support channels for driver advice.

    3. Check a Mac without deleting unfamiliar files

Use Activity Monitor to see which apps are busy. In current macOS versions, review System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Close optional apps, check available storage and install suitable updates after backing up. Menu names vary on older Macs.

    4. Know when to stop

Clicking noises, repeated disk errors, unexplained shutdowns or files disappearing can indicate more than a software slowdown. Avoid repeated restarts or heavy scans when a drive may be failing; seek advice about preserving data.

A useful support enquiry says “Word takes two minutes to open, but browsing works” rather than simply “it is slow”. Include what changed recently and whether a backup exists. Remote help can investigate software and settings, but it cannot install memory, replace a drive or guarantee an old computer will meet a new application’s requirements.
