Move iPhone Photos to a Computer Without Losing Originals
Choose between USB import and iCloud, check what has really transferred and avoid deleting the only copy of important photos.

Choose USB import or iCloud access
A USB import copies items to the computer. iCloud Photos synchronises a library across signed-in devices. Those are different workflows: deleting from a synced library can affect other devices, while an independently saved copy needs its own backup. Decide which outcome you want before clearing space.
Transfer with a USB cable
Use a cable that supports data. Unlock the iPhone and approve Trust This Computer only on a computer you trust. On Windows, Apple’s current instructions use the Apple Devices app and Microsoft Photos import. On a Mac, use Photos or Image Capture. Select a small group, import it and check the result before a large transfer.
If iCloud Photos keeps optimised versions on the phone, the full originals may need to download before USB import to a PC. Follow Apple’s guidance instead of assuming missing items are lost.
If the computer cannot see the phone
Try a known data cable and another suitable USB port. Check that the phone stays unlocked and that its trust prompt is visible. Avoid installing unknown transfer utilities from advertisements. Record whether charging works, whether another cable helps and what the computer reports.
Make a second copy before clearing storage
Open several transferred photos and videos. Check old and recent items, confirm the destination folder and include it in a backup. Only then consider deleting originals through a process you understand. Do not use “delete after import” simply to save a few clicks.
Remote help can investigate software, import settings and account access. A damaged connector, failed phone or a locked device may need a different service. Never send private photos, device passcodes or account-recovery codes in an enquiry.
