WiFi Connected but No Internet? Checks Before You Reset

Work out whether a connection problem affects one computer, your WiFi or the internet service, with practical checks for Australian homes and offices.

    1. Establish what still works

    • Can another device open several websites on the same WiFi, with mobile data switched off for the test?
    • Does the affected computer work using an existing Ethernet connection?
    • Does the issue affect every website or only one application?
    • Did it begin after a move, password change, VPN connection or update?

Take note of the results. A phone quietly switching to mobile data can make an outage look like a fault on the computer. Keep a separate way to contact your internet provider if the whole connection is down.

    2. Try simple device checks

Confirm WiFi is enabled, Airplane mode is off and you selected the expected network. Restart the affected computer after saving work. Windows offers a Network and Internet troubleshooter through Get Help. If the connection belongs to a workplace, ask before changing VPN, firewall or managed network settings.

    3. Check the router and provider

Look at the provider’s outage information from another connection. A router restart may help, but it will interrupt everyone using it, including calls and some connected services. Follow the provider’s instructions and allow time for reconnection. Do not factory-reset the router as a first step: saved internet, WiFi and telephone settings may be lost.

    4. Understand remote-support limits

A technician cannot use normal screen sharing over a connection that is completely offline. Describe the problem using another device before booking. We may help investigate a single computer, software or configuration issue once a suitable connection exists; your provider must investigate network outages and line faults.

For a useful enquiry, include your device type, the exact error and whether other devices work. Do not send your WiFi password or router admin password in a public form.
