Camera or Microphone Not Working in Teams or Zoom?

Work through device selection, permissions and connection checks before an important video call, with advice for home and business computers.

    1. Test before the meeting

Open the meeting application’s audio and video settings, choose the intended devices and use its test or preview tools where available. Then join a practice meeting rather than troubleshooting for the first time in front of a client. Close other applications that may be using the camera.

    2. Check permissions and physical controls

Look for a camera shutter, headset mute switch and the app’s own mute button. Windows and macOS have privacy settings controlling camera and microphone access. A browser-based meeting also needs permission for that website. Change permissions only for the app or site you intend to use, and follow company rules on managed devices.

    3. Separate sound problems from connection problems

If video freezes but the microphone test works, investigate the connection rather than replacing the headset immediately. Try a stable existing wired connection or move closer to WiFi. Pause large downloads when appropriate. If everybody loses sound only when one person joins, ask participants to check duplicated speakers and microphones.

Headphones can help avoid echo when a computer microphone picks up sound from its own speakers. In a shared meeting room, multiple open microphones can create feedback even when every individual device works.

    4. Gather useful details

    • Which app and version are you using: desktop or browser?
    • Does the camera or microphone work in another trusted app?
    • Is the issue before joining, throughout the meeting or only with one contact?
    • Did anything change after a headset, docking station or software update?

Remote help can investigate application settings, permissions and device selection with your approval. A damaged port, failed camera or organisation-wide service issue may need escalation. Download meeting applications from their official sources and do not allow remote access from an unexpected “support” message.

Menus and recovery options vary by device, account and software version. Use the manufacturer’s guidance for your setup. A guide is general information; contact us before paying if remote help may not be suitable.
