Clicked a Scam Link? What to Check Next
Different actions need different responses: opening a page, entering a password, installing software or sending money. Start with what happened.

If you only opened a webpage
Close it without entering details or accepting downloads. Check whether anything downloaded, requested notification permission or asked you to install an extension. A click alone does not prove an infection, but do not treat an unfamiliar page’s own “all clear” message as evidence either.
If you entered credentials or approved a sign-in
Use a trusted device and the provider’s official security page. Review the affected account, recovery methods and unfamiliar sign-ins. If you reused the password, other accounts may need attention too. For work accounts, notify the organisation immediately so an administrator can review access and any relevant business impact.
If you installed software or allowed remote access
Disconnect the affected computer from the internet and seek advice using another trusted device. Keep a record of the software, times and actions you remember. Do not reconnect merely because the person who contacted you says a second session is needed. Account exposure and device cleanup need separate consideration.
If money or payment details were involved
Contact your bank promptly through a known channel. Scamwatch explains reporting and identity-support options. Be cautious of follow-up messages claiming they can retrieve stolen money for a fee. A computer support session cannot reverse a bank transfer or guarantee recovery of funds.
Get suitable help without exposing more information
An initial enquiry should describe the event and what you clicked, installed or disclosed without repeating the secret information. Do not send passwords, card details, MFA codes, identity documents or confidential work files. We can discuss remote software assessment where appropriate; serious business incidents may require specialist response before routine troubleshooting.
If someone in Melbourne or regional Victoria needs help, the same remote-suitability limits apply: a disconnected or inaccessible device may need guided or hands-on assistance first.
